Self-Competence – Proven in Clinics and Daily Life
The self-competence model was developed through practical work with over 1,000 patients in the psychological services of several clinics in Germany. It was developed by Susanne and Arne Salig in collaboration with Melanie Theissler.
Our key insight: People who learn to better perceive themselves, accept themselves, and take responsible care of themselves build strong inner stability – regardless of external circumstances.
The model has been successfully used for prevention, therapy support (depression, anxiety disorders), and relapse prevention.
Today, it also empowers leaders, entrepreneurs, and individuals facing multiple daily challenges.
Our model visualizes self-competence as a house – built steadily from the ground up:
01
Self-Awareness (the foundation)
Recognizing your own feelings, needs, and thoughts clearly.
02
Self-Acceptance (load-bearing wall)
The ability to embrace yourself with all your strengths and weaknesses and accept your past.
03
Self-Empowerment (load-bearing wall)
The willingness to take responsibility for your own thoughts, emotions, and actions.
04
Self-Care (supporting pillar)
Respecting your limits and actively nurturing your physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
05
Self-Esteem (protective roof)
A stable sense of being valuable as a person – independent of external achievements or opinions.
Only when all parts are solidly established does a strong, resilient "house" emerge.
Neglecting key elements can lead to instability – manifesting as self-doubt, burnout, or conflict.
